An African Safari: A Diamond in the Rough

January 17 2004--In A Diamond in the Rough, Millie Kelley transports the reader from the rugged hunting grounds of the Colorado Mountains where one can hear the sounds of snow melting from the trees to the spectacular countryside of South Africa where one can hear the tromping of trees by elephants. This tale of triumph, tragedy, deceit, and love spans three generations and two continents. Matt McCartney—with the help of his childhood companion, Bodi—learns the ropes of running his father’s African Safari while, back in the States, his sister Jess McCartney—who lost her mother to cancer when she was a young girl—is determined to become a doctor and save lives. But her altruistic ideologies are soon threatened when she stumbles across a sinister plot: Senator Holmes is out to save his daughter and is willing to do almost anything, even the unthinkable, to get Lizzy the medical care she needs. Jess is unwittingly caught up in his evil plan and her life dangles on the edge.

Meanwhile Matt is facing his own dangers. “Whenever I go anywhere, they always ask which animal is my favorite to hunt. I usually respond by saying, ‘Whatever I happen to be hunting at the time’ and let it go at that. But rarely do I talk about the dangers. It’s just not good for business. But truth be told, I have often come close to being killed by the vicious beasts that inhabit the dry desert plains that rise gradually from humid lowlands to partially dried plateaus.”

All audiences, including men, women and young adults, will enjoy the book, A Diamond in the Rough, available from American Book Publishing because of the adventure and triumph that the McCartney children go through.
